Hulshorsterzand

About 13 kilometers from Buitenplaats Elspeterbosch, you will find the Hulshorsterzand, part of the Leuvenumse Woods in the Northwest Veluwe. This varied nature reserve is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is one of the oldest forest areas in the Netherlands.

The Heetjesroute is a beautiful 8-kilometer walk that takes you through all the diverse landscapes of the area: through ancient beech forests, over open heathland, along impressive drifting dunes, and along the banks of the Leuvenumse Creek, the longest creek in the Veluwe. Along the way, you walk through one of the rarest habitats in the Netherlands, home to special animals such as the antlion, dune pipit, and rare sand bees. In the forest, wild boars, red deer, roe deer, badgers, and martens are familiar sights.
